Overview
Psychometric profiling is lacking: it misses the holistic view.
It is better to be fluid in approach to the changing ways of work. As automation takes over the mundane tasks there is a need to be creative.
On the left, below, are Belbin roles and De Bono's thinking hats are on the right.
Managers like Belbin roles as it is easy for them to pigeonhole people. However I frequently hear people saying that they disagree with their profile. It is a bit dated but well known so I will use it as a starting point before exploring alternative role type.
The "equalisers" below provide a rudimentary view of the left and right brain functions. The brain has a mini neural net diagram that reflects the stronger settings.
Computers can do the left side functions better than the right. Neural networks are not, yet, modelled to apply creative thinking.
Which type of thinking do you need to practise today - and for the future?
Uses
- One off task that requires a different approach.
- Taking on a new role may require a new mindset.
- Spark a new idea into life by thinking afresh.
- Improvement Kata if you need to change your way of work.
- A six week neuro-plasticity transformation.
- A fun filled tea-break experiment.
Icon Summary
Belbin roles are:
|
Completer Finisher |
Most effectively used at the end of tasks to polish and scrutinise the work for errors, subjecting it to the highest standards of quality control. |
|
Shaper |
Provides the necessary drive to ensure that the team keeps moving and does not lose focus or momentum. |
|
Implementer |
Needed to plan a workable strategy and carry it out as efficiently as possible. |
|
Monitor Evaluator |
Provides a logical eye, making impartial judgements where required and weighs up the team's options in a dispassionate way |
|
Plant |
Tends to be highly creative and good at solving problems in unconventional ways. |
|
Specialist |
Brings in-depth knowledge of a key area to the team |

Positives, plus points. Why an idea is useful. Logical reasons are given |
|
Information and data. Neutral and objective. What do I know? What do I need to find out? How will I get the information I need? |
Connectome
The connectome is a model of the white matter in the brain. White Matter links the clusters of grey matter.
The paths will change as you move the slider controls. It is a simple (inaccurate) way breaking fixed thought patterns.
The pathways grow stronger the more they are used.
Instructions
- Think of a problem or issue at hand. If necessary write it as a statememnt of intent.
- Create a logical left brain profile
- Do the same for the creative right
- Use the presets below as starting points
- Fine tune by moving the sliders
This is a prototype to test the hypothesis.
It is a simple map of the real territory - your brain - and how it makes make connections. It it easy to get stuck in a "default" setting.
The three highest ranking dimensions from left and right will show primary connections. These are opening conditions.
By focusing on the primary connections we can extract the most powerful signals from the background noise. We can focus on new approcahes to get better results.
The more you practise a configuration the more likely your neuro-plasticity will change - and learn to change quickly. This
allows us to change mindsets and adapt to changing environments, circumstances and events.
Links are provided below to rational and creative samples to get started.
- You may be very creative but not a completer finisher so others never see your good ideas.
- You may have to do a lot of left brain work in your 925. Are you at risk from automation? Dial up ways to practise creativity
